Freddie Gately Reviews the YRG-1000

reprinted from www.freddieguitar.com

As soon as I discovered that I could use my keyboard to play all of the midi instruments in Garage Band, I was pumped! The door had been opened to a whole new musical world. MIDI had come so far in the last 10 years and I hadn't even noticed. The MIDI songs that I remember listening to, were mechanical, 8 bit, Mario Bros style music. But now, instruments are digitally sampled (actual instruments recorded) and with the addition of touch sensitivity, I could get pretty close to a real sounding track. There was just one major setback – I'm a much better guitar player than piano player.

I started to look at MIDI guitar options. I had heard rumors of people using guitars as MIDI controllers, but I just couldn't figure out how it would really work in the real world. There were MIDI converting pickups that you could install in your guitar, but they were several hundred dollars, required a lot of modifications, and still didn't sound like they worked well for folks. I'm sure that a more dedicated person could get it working somewhat well, but time and money were things that I just didn't have. I decided to let the thought go, but did an occasional Google search every year-or-so just to see if there were any advancements.

This last month, I was getting ready to TAB some songs and thought of how convenient a MIDI guitar would be. I finally just faced that fact that I would have to tear into one of my older guitars and try to turn it into a MIDI controller. While searching through the various forums and products, I noticed that some new MIDI guitars were hitting the market. The price tag – at least $1000. They were cool, but not that cool... Then, I came across this little gem.

The YouRock Guitar had all the features that I was looking for and at a price tag that wouldn't break the bank... shockingly cheap actually.

You Rock Guitar review

You Rock Guitar

T34
  • Hybrid guitar takes gaming control to the next level, while teaching you the real thing

In the last decade game controllers have appeared in all shapes and sizes. A major catalyst for this is without doubt the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises. The You Rock Guitar aims to take this to the next level by incorporating a game controller into a real instrument.

The result is an incredibly fun device that really does give you that extra feeling of authenticity as you strum real strings with a real plectrum using real frets. Daunting at first it's surprisingly easy to get used to, even for non guitarists. Rubber coated strings and two colour coded fret sections make it comfortable to use for all ages.

    You Rock Guitar: Learning Device

In 'You Rock' mode the You Rock Guitar allows players to migrate from simple game control to playing real guitar. Jam along with one of the numerous backing tracks, and you wont miss a note thanks to the You Rock's assistance. By only sounding notes and chords that are in key with the backing track and muting the duff ones - just like in a game – You Rock mode means you play a faultless performance everytime.

The backing tracks are built using some of the more common notes and progressions in rock music. With the You Rock mode on you can experiment and learn which notes work (and therefore which don't) simply by playing along. As a learner this is a fun way to get the hang of things, and avoids those frustrating days when you simply just can't play.

    You Rock Guitar: Digital Guitar

Not just a toy for gaming or learning, the You Rock is a digital guitar in its own right. The plastic neck and lightweight body prevent it from feeling anything like the real thing, also the rubber covered neck might protect your fingers, but can make note finding a little less intuitive. Purists might also take some getting used to more subtle controls like muting strings which is much harder with this device.

This is of course a consumer device and not aimed at replacing your trusty guitar just yet. It plays well enough and it's great for picking up, putting on some headphones and experimenting with some ideas. The preset sounds allow you to play in a number of styles – acoustic, country, punk and so on.

Connect via USB to use the guitar as a MIDI controller – a task it actually excels at – and you can use your skills to control synthesizers, drum machines and more. It also works with software like GarageBand Reason, Logic and Cubase.

At £200, plus £27 for the cartridge the You Rock Guitar is expensive if you’re using it soley as a gaming controller, but calling it a controller is selling it short. It offers far more than that; it’s an innovative learning aid for budding guitarists and anyone who creates digital music and a great example of how technology can be used to help develop skills.

SMG Review: You Rock Guitar by Inspired Instruments!

SMG SVH Review SMG Review: You Rock Guitar by Inspired Instruments!

The Inspired Instruments You Rock Guitar!

Over the past five years or so there have been a huge influx of popular video games focused on “virtually living the dream” and promising to transform your youngster or teen into the next Guitar Hero. This insurgence of guitar based gaming has done a great job of reintroducing REAL guitar driven music to the modern music market and has introduced countless young potential shredders to some classic music that they may have never been exposed to otherwise. The drawback to these games is that they never really focus on true musicianship or include anything to do with even closely simulating actual guitar playing as pressing colored buttons has absolutely zero benefit to learning notes, pitch, fingering etc. But a little company called Inspired Instruments wants to change all of that with the new You Rock Guitar!

The You Rock Guitar is a fully functional game controller that features real feel and playability using strings to pick and a touch sensitive fret board complete with simulated strings and fret markers all together created in a way that makes gaming much more like actually jamming! Impressive right, but that’s not all…. The You Rock guitar is MUCH more than just a game controller (which in hindsight is really the least impressive function this little sucker packs). It is also a fully functional instrument that can be used with an amp, headphones, your computer, your mobile phone, and even works as a midi controller (a function that I think is amazing considering how difficult it is to accurately replicate stringed instruments when using the standard midi keyboard to trigger sounds). The You Rock Guitar boasts 25 sound presets for guitar, an additional 50 guitar synth presets, 25 jam tracks with “You Rock Modes” for learning scales, 50 built-in drum tracks, 65 alternate tunings with open space to save your own, 100 customizable parameters and presets, multiple play modes, removable neck for travel or storage, multi-directional whammy bar, game controls, and the ability to interchange headstock designs.

Overall a very impressive little unit. The tracking is fast so for recording with midi alone this is a great tool for the recording guitarist. The pre-set sounds are decent and have a vast array of tones and effects, making this a great axe for practicing or jamming anywhere. The removable neck makes it easy to toss in a backpack and take anywhere (even on a plane). The You Rock Guitar comes complete with chord and scale charts and some other beginner guitarist training tools. With the ease and versatility of connectivity to so many different applications, this is a piece of gear that is no one trick pony. So saddle up and take one for a ride, you may just be the coolest cowboy at the rodeo!

You Rock Guitar MIDI Controller

February 8th, 2011 Jonny Kaine Posted in GearInstrumentsMIDI |

If you're looking for a MIDI Controller guitar you should definitely consider the "You Rock Guitar." I love mine and at about $200 it seems like a really good deal considering all that it is capable of.

It may look look like a video game controller (and it can actually be used as one) but it really works quite well. If you've got some sweet VSTi synthesizers (and/or samplers - even drum machines!) then you can plug this thing up via USB and control them. I use mine with REAPER but I believe it works well with any software that has MIDI input.

I've been very impressed with how responsive it is so far. I wasn't really expecting it to work as well as it does. Nice surprise. Yes I have had some dropped notes with finger style playing but I think that may just be a matter of adjusting the settings and how I play it (you have to be a bit more precise with a MIDI guitar than you do with a real guitar.)

On the other hand, this guitar is much easier to fret than a real guitar as there are no strings to hold down (the only strings are for the picking hand.)

It's got all kinds of on board features and sounds but to be honest most of them seem really cheesy to me, I say skip all of that silliness and use it as a MIDI controller that's where it's true awesomeness lies.

I plan on sharing some samples of the kind of things you can do with the You Rock Guitar as a MIDI controller in the future, in fact I may just edit them into this post (after I put them up on YouTube.)
