Connecting the YRG to Ableton Live! will allow you to trigger internal instruments with your guitar, record and compose and trigger loops. Here is how to connect the YRG to Ableton:
Connect Your You Rock Guitar to your computer and power it on. Open Ableton.
Open Ableton’s “Preferences” window by hitting (Ctrl + ,) for PC or (Cmd + ,) for MAC and click on the MIDI/Sync tab from the menu on the left. Under the MIDI Ports section, there should be an input and an output listed for “iii You Rock Guitar Vx.xx”
On the Input port for “iii You Rock Guitar Vx.xx” turn on the “Track” button.
Ableton displays an indicator of incoming MIDI signals at the top right of the screen. Check that this box blinks when notes are played on the guitar.
Finally, toggle the record button on an instrument track that you want to use and play!
You now know how to connect your YRG to Ableton. Good luck and enjoy creating!
Custom MIDI Mapping in Ableton
Back in the Ableton’s “Preferences” menu, it is beneficial to also check the “Remote” button. This will allow you to manually map controllers on the guitar (ie. whammy bar, volume knob, and joystick) to any parameters inside Ableton.
To map controllers on the guitar to parameters in ableton, click the “MIDI” button towards the top right of the screen.
This will show all mappable parameters in a blue color. To map a parameter to a controller on the guitar, simply click on a button, knob, or slider in Ableton that you want to control and then move the controller or push the button on the guitar that you want to control it with.
Parameters that have been successfully mapped will show up in the column on the left. You will also be able to visually see the parameter changing (ie. knob turning, slider moving, etc) inside ableton as you move the controller on the guitar!
Note: The two bridge toggle switches (+/-) can also be used for mapping, but must be enabled for mapping use first. This can be done by enabling S1 and S2 under the Preset Options menu of the YRG.
